As a songwriter

Join this society in Italy

Writers generally join one authors' society for a given territory and right. That society collects your writer share from other countries through its agreements with sister societies, so you don't join a second one for the same rights.

Who can join
Songwriters, Publishers
Joining fee
No separate admission fee for associate authors. Authors joining by mandate pay €32 stamp duty once, at registration. No refund if you cancel the application.
Yearly fee
Authors: associate €148 + €2 stamp duty/yr; mandate €58/yr (VAT incl.). Free if 30 or under (due from the year after you turn 30) or over 80. Publishers: associate €598 + €2; mandate €238 (Italy) / €196 + €2 (abroad).
Processing time
Membership takes effect once SIAE receives the application. SIAE checks the requirements within 60 calendar days and can exclude you within that period.
Apply online
Partly. Authors apply online on siae.it or in the SIAE+ app with SIAE's e-signature. Publishers and heirs apply by PEC (membership@pec.siae.it) or registered mail.
Members from abroad
Yes. Rights holders can apply as natural or legal persons, 'italiane o straniere' (Italian or foreign). Separate fees apply to publishers based abroad. Same-rights/territory exclusivity applies.
Who is eligible
  • Authors (music): declare and deposit at least one work, uploaded with a copy (audio file, or score and lyrics).
  • Music publishers: declare and deposit at least 10 works as original publisher, and be listed in the business register (Registro delle imprese / REA).
  • Full membership (associato) requires no final convictions for copyright or property crimes; with such convictions you can still join via a mandate (mandante).
  • You must have no commitments with another collecting society for the same repertoire, rights and territories (self-declaration in the application).
  • Under 16: you can only apply via PEC (certified email), signed by a parent or guardian. The app is for authors over 16.

Sources and notes

Two ways to join: associato (member with voting rights) or mandante (mandate only). Fees differ.

Joining gives SIAE an exclusive mandate for your repertoire. You can limit rights or territories in writing by 31 August, effective 1 January of the next year.

You can cancel within 15 days of SIAE receiving the application. After that, leaving needs at least 4 months' notice and takes effect on the next 1 January.

The annual fee is deducted from royalty payouts. If you don't pay it, membership lapses automatically.

Documents signed abroad (e.g. by heirs) must be authenticated by an Italian consulate.

How we chose these

Your home society comes first: it is the one you join for the rights listed. The joining details come from each society's own website, read on the date shown on its card. Countries we haven't checked yet show the society from our worldwide directory, with a link to its site.

Why join?

Songwriters

Societies pay the writers registered with them. If you write songs and aren't a member of an authors' society, your writer share of radio, TV, live and streaming plays can't reach you. It sits unidentified until it is claimed, or is shared out to others.

Performers

When a recording you are on is broadcast or played in public, performers are owed a share (neighbouring rights). It is paid through performers' societies, and registering is how it finds you.

Producers and publishers

Master owners collect their share of the same plays through producers' societies. Publishers collect the publisher share of the songs through the authors' society. Both collect through a society membership.
