What the figure is

PPL collects money for performers and recording rightsholders in the UK when recordings are broadcast or played in public. At 31 December 2024 it held £23,349,000 collected in 2018 to 2023 that it had not allocated to its members, 2% of its net distributable revenue.

Why the newest years hold the most

PPL's report gives the amounts by year without the reasons. The pattern fits the time matching takes: recent money has had the least time to reach a recording and its line-up.

Money waiting for a performer

Separately, PPL had £15.7M allocated but unpaid at the end of 2024, on accounts on hold because the performer's registration was incomplete or there were no valid bank details.

After six years

PPL closes each year's UK revenue after six years. £2.3M of 2017 revenue was still undistributed when that year closed in March 2025. Such money is made available for reallocation to members or to music-industry causes; in 2024 PPL gave £1.3M to industry causes.

Who loses

Session musicians and featured performers missing from a recording's line-up, and anyone with an incomplete PPL registration or old bank details.

What an artist can do

  1. Register as a performer with PPL, or with a performers' society in the home country.
  2. Check the line-up claimed on each recording and add missing performances.
  3. Keep bank details up to date: £15.7M was waiting on accounts on hold.
